How to overcome procrastination
How to overcome procrastination?
Most people don't know how to overcome procrastination so we should discover what it it?
Procrastination is delaying or postponing an action or a task to another time that must be done, often because it's unpleasant or boring. Most people procrastinate for doing a task; they would rather keep it away from their sights to not do it.Well, procrastination is a trap that most of us fall into but we should understand WHY we procrastinate? Does it relate with:
-Mood: we don't have it in time we must accomplish a task.
-boredom: we feel bored because of the unpleasant task so we lose enthusiasm towards it.
-Stress: we feel stressful due to pressure exerted in work, so we boost apathy for the instantaneous task.
Do not confuse procrastination with laziness!
Procrastination is often confused with laziness, but they are very different. The first one is an active process that you would rather do something else instead of the task that you know you should be doing. In contrast, the second one suggests inactivity and unwillingness to act.
So if your procrastination is related by one of the three conditions below you will be able to overcome it by steps. You may be asking How?
Step1: recognize that you are procrastinating
As I mentioned, the three conditions below might be not enough to procrastinate, so when you notice that you put off a task you should be able to know why you did that:Is there an important task that must be done before the other one?
Do you feel less enthusiasm towards the task?
Do you have plenty of work?
Do you tackle it when you have a good mood or you wait for the right time?
So after recognizing that you procrastinate ,you should be able to know why?
Step 2: why you’re procrastinating
- You should be able to know why you are procrastinating, maybe the tasks are unpleasant, and so you seek enjoyable ones. In addition,
- Workload makes you under pressure and without effective decisions then postpones them.
- You may search for perfectionism because some people fear failure and they seek to optimize their performances in specific tasks.
- Schedule time isn’t accurate for specific tasks.
Step3: How to overcome procrastination
According to researcher Piers steel Procrastination Equation is:
1- Motivation : it is equal to expectency times value on impulsiveness times
Delay .
-
Expectancy
means you expect everything to working on to succeed, you have the ability, the
confidence to create the outcome for reading a book, launching a new project or
hard one whatever.
-
Value: if
you want motivation related by expectancy so you need to times it by value
which means if you value something meaningful, you’ll be engaged to do it.
-
Impulsiveness: we
need immediately gratification, we want to feel good right now .So, we should
control our impulsiveness for motivation.
-
Delay:
How for the future we need to complete a project, the further out the lower is
our motivation to do it right now. So, it needed to be very sure to take acute
action.
2- Island
Hopping: if you want to increase your expectancy ,your
self-confidence can use a boost and we can all afford to boost it whatever your
level at you always to dial it ,then you create what he calls success Spirals where you’re spiraling up by
creating a series of winds you want to have many successes and he uses the
metaphor of his Polynesian explorers so if you’re sitting in island here you
are and you look forward and you see an island in the horizon and you go for it
,you sail to that island you get there and then from that island you see
another island ,at the end the process continues that’s success spiraling each
time you succeed you have more confidence you can do it again like dominos .
3-Mental
contrasting: is bigger than creative visualization ,So if you
are into your vision board the secret you may want to read up right here is
particular research has been done for decades that shows merely visualization
your little creative fantasy about what you want to see in the future it’s
incredibly ineffective ,you need to add something to your creative
visualization it’s fine and awesome to imagine your ideal outcome with your
current reality you need to hold an expectancy that you can achieve the outcome
that you want to see whether is getting a job ,writing a book, creating a
relationship. In addition, you need to juxtapose it mentally, contrast it with
your current reality and you know there will be struggles, there will be setbacks.
4-10%
= +1 MO: if you can improve your efficiency by 10% ,it doesn’t sound like a ton
right but if you boost your performance by 10% you would literally create more
than an extra months’ worth work in the course of a year .You’d be able to get
a month’s more work done in a year by
simply becoming 10 % more effective and that’s crazy !
5- Goals: are the number one way
to deal with procrastination if you want to increase your goals, have a clear
sense of what you expect to see ,have a clearer value around it that’s going to
be the best way to accelerate and then chunk it like the example above of
islands . What do you do when you chunk your goals is you remove the long term
delay you take a huge project you get really specific on what you want to do
then you break it down on a small components and then you create routines to
execute against those goals .
